Greetings fellow District 5010 Rotarians.
We are now through our first quarter and it’s hard to believe I have already visited over half of the clubs in our district. It has been fun to visit the clubs, meet the members and tour the club projects. There have been a lot of shenanigans and lots of fun hanging with Lt. Governor Lisa Phillips and great Assistant Governors across the state. If you want to see what we have been up to, check out the District 5010 Facebook site, where Lisa has posted our DG Chronicles.
For those clubs that I have not visited, I will be emphasizing the importance of Education, Youth Exchange, Human Trafficking and ShelterBox. If your clubs are active in any of these categories, I would love to hear about it when I visit your club. For those I have visited, I look forward to hearing reports of progress each club has made in these areas.
Rotary has an international theme each month which are listed below. This is a great opportunity to focus your speakers, service projects or fireside chats around these very important topics.
- October is Community Economic and Development Month
- November is Rotary Foundation Month
- December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month
- January is Vocational Service Month
- February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month
- March is Water and Sanitation Month
- April is Maternal and Child Health Month
- May is Youth Service Month
- June is Rotary Fellowship Month
While touring various Rotary projects around the state, I see one constant theme on the projects … “NO BRANDING”! As we continue to do great work in our communities, let people know who we are and what we do. If you apply for a District Grant, add funds for branding. If you have a project out there now, make a Rotary sign and attached it. We need to let people see what we our doing in our communities.
Thanks for all you do for Rotary.
DG Mike

Soldotna Rotary hosted the 11th Annual Kenai Peninsula Beer Fest with a special appearance from DG Mike himself (sporting his fishing beard!). The event supports various community projects around Soldotna and is the largest fundraiser for the club raising over $25,000.
Pictured here are Kenai Rotary Club President Nikki, DG Mike and Soldotna Rotary Club President Linzey.

Both the Kenai & Soldotna Clubs participated in the Peanut Butter Challenge and donated over 500lbs of Peanut Butter to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.
A fun challenge between the clubs all supporting a very needy cause.

Seward Rotary has been busy with its annual Golf Classic Fundraiser that brought in $10,000! Past President Nikki was on the co-winning team! Along with swinging the golf clubs, Seward Rotary is focusing on protecting the environment this year to highlight our new focus area. They have purchased 10 recycle cans and partnered with Sustainable Seward to find businesses to adopt the cans and recycling duties. Five businesses so far have partnered and installed the cans, and put one at Rotary Park and Rotarians are doing the recycling.
They partnered with the Seward Library and Museum, Historic Preservation Commission, Resurrection Bay Historical Society and Corvis Designs to create a window decal for the library entrance encouraging tourists and locals to download the Seward Historic Walking Tour map onto their phone, with a QR code instead of picking up a paper map.
Rotary worked with Corvis to develop the design and paid for the decal. We are working on final decal size and placement now. Since then, the Chamber of Commerce has said they would also like one. These decals will be great in conserving paper and reducing litter. Rotary was also a partner on the Historic Walking Tour.
